Here:
Download the file,
Then extract all the contents to your space quest 6 folder
Run the SQ6 install program again.

Wow, good work buddy. Excellent idea...upload to some server that will let you.

To people applying this patch:
1.Remember to edit the bottom part of the resource.cfg file starting at "ResMap=" and insert the directory of SQ6's install for that and everything underneith it.
2.And make sure you have copied everything from the cd that was not allready there from the install itself into that directory, or at least all the files you need.

Space Quest 6 No CD Patch

The following are detailed instructions for configuring your installation of Space Quest 6 to run completely from the hard drive without the need of the CD during gameplay. You will be taken step by step through changing the path for every necessary command line within "resource.cfg" to properly reflect off of your hard disk and then copying the corresponding files to the appropriate hard drive directory. These instructions have been organized for your own convenience, but are not guaranteed to work on all systems or all versions of Space Quest 6. Please proceed with caution, being sure to follow these instructions exactly as they are. If by the use of these instructions you end up ruining your installation of Space Quest 6 rather than patching it, simply reinstall the game using your original CD. It is strongly recommended that you backup up all your saved games before proceeding.

Note: This has only been tested using the DOS version of Sq6 (provided with the original SQ Collection CD), using Windows 98 as the operating system.

The first step is to install Sq6DOS to your hard drive (most likely C:\), selecting (3), the 40 meg resource option.
After you have completed the installation, open up "MS-DOS Prompt" and type "edit". Hit your "ALT" key and select "File"-"Open" from the menu. Browse to the directory where you installed SQ6DOS and open up the "resource.cfg" file.

The following is an example of how your "resource.cfg" file should appear prior to editing. The red lines indicate commands which need to be changed or re-routed. For this example, we will assume that your cd-rom drive is "D:\" and that your hard drive (where your game has been installed) is "C:\".

videoDrv = VESA.DRV
soundDrv = ADL.DRV
audioDrv = DACBLAST.DRV
joyDrv = NO
directory = \sierra\sq6dos
cmd = SQ6DOS
mouseDrv = NONE
memoryDrv = NONE
minMemory = 1600k
brightness= 0
language = 1
minCPU = 386
CD = yes

resMap=D:;C:\sierra\sq6dos
resAUD=D:
resSFX=D:
patchDir=C:\sierra\sq6dos;D:;D:\MOVIES
movieDir=D:\MOVIES
robot=D:\ROBOTS

One by one, we shall go through the list and re-route everything necessary to the hard drive.
The only thing which requires change in the upper field is "CD = yes". Replace it with "Cd = no".

Now for the lower field. At first, one would think that replacing "resMAP=D:;C:\sierra\sq6dos" with "resMAP=C:\sierra\sq6dos" would correctly re-route the "resource.map" file command to the hard drive, but apparrently, for some reason, the game needs to refer to two seperate locations when using this file (or simply a seperate location from the game's directory) during gameplay, as is indicated by the symbol ";". To work our way around this problem, we shall change the command line to "resMAP=C:\SIERRA\SQ6PATCH;C:\SIERRA\SQ6DOS" This way, we avoid changing the syntax of the command line. Follow the same step for all remaining commands which hold this syntax.

The next command to be changed is "resAUD=D:" Because this refers directly to the CD, all we need to do is re-route it directly to our new patch file directory. To do this, we will replace the command line with "resAUD=C:\SIERRA\SQ6PATCH" Follow the same step for all remaining commands which refer directly to the CD.
The following is an example of what your "resource.cfg" file should look like after editing. The red lines indicate commands which have been successfully changed or re-routed.

videoDrv = VESA.DRV
soundDrv = ADL.DRV
audioDrv = DACBLAST.DRV
joyDrv = NO
directory = \sierra\sq6dos
cmd = SQ6DOS
mouseDrv = NONE
memoryDrv = NONE
minMemory = 1600k
brightness= 0
language = 1
minCPU = 386
CD = NO

resMap=C:\SIERRA\SQ6PATCH;C:\sierra\sq6dos
resAUD=C:\SIERRA\SQ6PATCH
resSFX=C:\SIERRA\SQ6PATCH
patchDir=C:\sierra\sq6dos;C:\SIERRA\SQ6PATCH;C:\SIERRA\SQ6PATCH\MOVIES
movieDir=C:\SIERRA\SQ6PATCH\MOVIES
robot=C:\SIERRA\SQ6PATCH\ROBOTS

After you have finished updating "resource.cfg", save it and close it.
Now that we have successfully updated the "resource.cfg" file to refer to the hard drive, we must actually copy the required files (who's command lines were changed) to the appropriate hard drive directory to reflect off of our new configuration file.

Open up the "sierra" directory on your hard drive and create a new folder. Name it "SQ6PATCH". Make sure that you do this within the "sierra" directory, and not within the actual game directory ("sierra\sq6dos").

Open up the Sq6 CD-Rom folder and copy ALL THE FILES (excluding the folders) to "C:\SIERRA\SQ6PATCH". It is true that not all of these files may be neccessary to run the game, but because of the following command line: "patchDir=C:\sierra\sq6dos;D:;D:\MOVIES", we will copy all files residing within "D:\" (excluding the folders) just to be on the safe side. When we think about it, the command refers to "D:\" as the patch directory, before referring to "D:\MOVIES", which means that the game could be searching for any of those files residing within "D:\" as well as within "D:\MOVIES". Therefore, we need to make sure that it can access those neccesary files, whichever files they may be. Besides, copying all of these files is actually more simple than individually copying "resource.map," then "resource.aud," etc., and then trying to figure out which files are required to be read from the patch directory.
The next step is to copy the required folders to our newly created patch directory. Copy (from the cd) both folders "Movies" and "Robots" to "C:\SIERRA\SQ6PATCH".

Now everything is nearly set. There's only one more thing to do. Open up "checkcd.bat" (within the game's directory) using "MS-DOS Prompt" and delete ALL of the command lines, and then save the file. Note: If you do not perform this step, the game will still think that it needs the CD and will not run, even though it doesn't need it. Also note that you must not simply delete "checkcd.bat" as the game calls it upon startup, and therefore requires it in order to run. Therefore, "checkcd.bat" must remain as a file within the game directory, but the command lines within the file itself must be erased.

When you run your newly patched Space Quest 6 game, be sure to use "Sq6.bat" rather the "Sierra.exe".

Good, you pretty much took all of our information and combined it into one post, and were a bit more thorough than we were which will help new people.

Thanks for the compliment. Actually, I made this post back in 2003. I simply reposted it here because I thought it may have been helpful. Though, apparently, I'm not the only one who was able to figure out how to hack the game's resources.
