Computer Recommendation?

Postby kounterklockwise » Thu Nov 17, 2005 4:29 pm

I apologize in advance for delving into a topic which has been covered numerous times on this board...

But I'm curious as to what specs to look for in a computer to run Sierra games smoothly. What is it that makes the games run too fast on newer models, the RAM or the Processor Speed?

I don't like using DosBox but I don't want to buy an older model and have some games still run too quickly or too slowly on it.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

486 - 75 mhz
16-32 megs ram
4 mb video card - PCI
Creative labs sound card
1 gig hard drive with DOS
cd rom
3.5 floppy drive
5.25 floppy drive

---
Thats just what I would use for Sierra Games. Might want to get a P-II running windows 95 with 128 ram and a decent (30 gig) hard drive for games like Shivers 2, Kings Quest 8 and Quest for Glory 5.

Oh, and its the Clock Crystals that make these games run so fast.

The number of Clock ticks is measured in Hertz.

One Hertz = 1 clock tick per second.
so 1000 Hertz = 1 Mhz.
Imagine playing these games on a 3 Ghz. Processor.

I think that is around 3,000,000 clock ticks per second.

Make sure when you do that you get one with a good CMOS battery. You won't believe how many computers on Ebay don't have one.

I use Emulation too.

I just use DOSBox on my PC and it works great.

If I got a 486 computer with a 100 Mhz processor would that be too fast to run most of the older sierra games (SQ, KQ, QFG, LSL etc.)?

That should work fine.

133 Mhz seems to be the cut off for playing most old (SCI0 and SCI1) Sierra Games.
